Former Mayor of Melissa, Texas Guilty in Bribery Scheme
SHERMAN, Texas – The Department of Justice has announced a stunning conviction involving the former mayor of the city of Melissa. David E. Dorman, 66, of Melissa, Texas, and John Christie, 65, of Frisco, Texas, have pleaded guilty to their roles in an elaborate bribery scheme that shook the Eastern District of Texas.
David E. Dorman, the disgraced former mayor, has admitted to soliciting a $70,000 bribe from John Christie. The payoff was to secure the annexation of land from McKinney for Christie’s development ventures. Dorman’s crime was charged as mail fraud, while Christie’s role was classified as misprision of a felony.
In 2007, Dorman used his position to leverage the annexation deal, which was reportedly approved by both Melissa and McKinney. In return, Christie made payments totaling $30,000 to Dorman, including one $10,000 cash payment and two $10,000 checks.
The duo’s criminal activities were initially exposed through a federal grand jury indictment on September 12, 2012. Now, both face severe penalties. Dorman could be sentenced to up to 20 years in federal prison, while Christie is looking at up to three years for his part in the scheme.
This investigation has been a collaborative effort by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Assistant U.S. Attorney Shamoil T. Shipchandler. Sentencing dates are yet to be scheduled, but the conviction sends a clear message about the consequences of public corruption.
