Greg McKenzie, Gun Smuggling, New York 2022

Former Bureau of Prisons correctional officer Greg McKenzie has been sentenced to 36 months in prison for obstructing a federal investigation into the illegal smuggling of a firearm into the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC).

Mckenzie, aged 35 from Danbury, Connecticut, pleaded guilty before Judge P. Kevin Castel on September 14, 2022, and was sentenced today.

United States Attorney Damian Williams emphasized that McKenzie’s actions endangered the safety of inmates, prison staff, and the community. “By lying about his secret communications with an inmate who possessed a firearm, McKenzie thwarted a serious criminal investigation,” Williams stated.

The indictment revealed that on March 5, 2020, a loaded .22 caliber firearm was recovered from an MCC cell occupied by Deejay White. McKenzie, using a prepaid cellphone, had communicated with White and his wife, Dawntiana White, who helped in smuggling the weapon into the MCC.

Surveillance video showed McKenzie entering the MCC undetected and returning to Deejay White’s cellblock shortly after starting his shift. Deejay White pleaded guilty on July 23, 2021, to possessing the firearm inside the MCC, while Dawntiana White admitted to conspiring to smuggle it in on July 13, 2021.

During a November 4, 2021, interview with federal agents, McKenzie falsely denied ownership of the prepaid cellphone and any communication with inmates. In addition to his prison sentence, McKenzie was also sentenced to three years of supervised release.
