Greg McKenzie, Obstruction of Federal Investigation, New York 2022

New York – Greg McKenzie, a disgraced former correctional officer with the Bureau of Prisons, was sentenced to 36 months in prison today for his role in obstructing a federal investigation into the smuggling of a firearm into the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC).

Mckenzie, who pleaded guilty on September 14, 2022, before Judge P. Kevin Castel, admitted to lying to federal investigators about his secret communications with Deejay White, an inmate in possession of the firearm, and his wife Dawntiana White, who helped facilitate the illegal transfer.

The loaded .22 caliber firearm was recovered from inside an MCC cell on March 5, 2020. According to court documents, McKenzie purchased a prepaid cellphone to communicate with the Whites. Surveillance video and call detail records linked Mckenzie’s movements to the area where the Whites were located before he drove to the MCC for his midnight shift.

On July 23, 2021, Deejay White pleaded guilty to possessing the firearm within the MCC. His wife Dawntiana admitted her role in conspiracy charges on July 13, 2021. Mckenzie, now 35 years old and a resident of Danbury, Connecticut, was also sentenced to three years of supervised release following his prison term.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams stated that McKenzie’s actions endangered the lives of inmates, staff, and the community. ‘His sentence serves as a stark reminder that no one is above the law, especially public servants who violate their oaths,’ Williams added.

The investigation was a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Justice – Office of the Inspector General, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection in New York. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Aline R. Flodr, Jonathan E. Rebold, and Daniel H. Wolf led the prosecution.
