SAN JUAN, P.R. – Alexander Greaux-Gómez, a disgraced former Olympic athlete and coach, was found guilty today of preying on a teenage student, a conviction that sends a chilling message to predators hiding in positions of trust. The jury delivered the verdict after a grueling three-day trial, finding Greaux-Gómez guilty of sexual enticement of a minor and transportation with the intent of committing a criminal sexual act.
The case began to unravel on February 9, 2017, when agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), alongside the Puerto Rico Police Department’s Division of Sexual Crimes in Guayama, and prosecutors from the Puerto Rico Department of Justice, moved to arrest Greaux-Gómez. The former teacher and track and field coach at the Salinas’s specialized sports school, “Albergue Olímpico,” was initially accused of sexual enticement and production of child pornography, charges ultimately refined but resulting in today’s conviction.
Prosecutors laid out a disturbing timeline during the trial, revealing how Greaux-Gómez, then 39, began to target the victim when she was just 15 years old and a 7th-grade student at “Albergue Olímpico.” Evidence showed the defendant took a “special interest” in the minor, an interest that swiftly devolved into a predatory and manipulative relationship. He allegedly convinced her to engage in sexual acts not only at the school itself, but also in his vehicle and at an abandoned home school he previously operated – a calculated abuse of power and position.
The government’s case was further solidified by damning evidence obtained from WhatsApp messages. Greaux-Gómez allegedly imposed strict rules on the minor regarding the secrecy of their illicit relationship and bombarded her with explicit, sexually graphic communications. These digital breadcrumbs painted a clear picture of a calculated effort to control and exploit a vulnerable teenager. The evidence highlighted the insidious nature of grooming, where trust and authority are weaponized against a child.
“This conviction shows the commitment of our state and federal law enforcement agencies to apprehend and prosecute child predators,” stated United States Attorney for the District of Puerto Rico, Rosa Emilia Rodríguez-Vélez. “We entrust teachers to serve as role models for our children and safeguard their welfare. As this verdict makes clear, when that trust is violated, there will be severe consequences.”
Assistant United States Attorney Ginette Milanes prosecuted the case. Greaux-Gómez now faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years behind bars. His sentencing is scheduled for August 22, 2019, at 9:00 am, a date that brings a measure of justice for the victim and a stark warning to anyone who would exploit a child. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as sentencing approaches.
