A former U.S. corrections officer has admitted to stealing thousands of dollars’ worth of government property from a federal prison in central Pennsylvania. Fred Hagenbuch, 52, of Danville, pleaded guilty to theft of government property in federal court in Williamsport.

The stolen items, which included electrical conduit, fence post, and mesh fencing, were valued at approximately $1,545. At the time of the theft in December 2010, Hagenbuch was a Senior Officer Specialist at the U.S. Penitentiary-Lewisburg.

Hagenbuch’s guilty plea was announced by U.S. Attorney Peter J. Smith. A criminal information was filed in January 2013 charging Hagenbuch with the offense. The case was investigated by the U.S. Office of the Inspector General.

Assistant U.S. Attorney William Simmers prosecuted the case. The maximum penalty under the federal statute is 10 years’ imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine. The federal sentencing guidelines will also be taken into consideration by the judge.

The judge will consider a number of factors when determining Hagenbuch’s sentence, including the nature and seriousness of the offense, the defendant’s history and characteristics, and the need to punish the defendant, protect the public, and provide for the defendant’s educational, vocational, and medical needs.

A sentence will be imposed by the judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. Sentencing in the case has not yet been scheduled.
