Facemask Scam Hits NC
In a brazen attempt to deceive the public, fake flyers promoting the ‘Freedom to Breathe Agency’ (FTBA) have been circulating in North Carolina. The flyers, which include the United States Department of Justice’s seal, claim to offer exemptions from wearing facemasks during the COVID-19 pandemic.
U.S. Attorney Matthew G.T. Martin of the Middle District of North Carolina has issued a stern warning to the public, urging them to be aware of these fraudulent postings, cards, or flyers on the internet. ‘Do not be fooled by the chicanery and misappropriation of the DOJ eagle,’ said U.S. Attorney Martin. ‘These cards do not carry the force of law.’
The ‘Freedom to Breathe Agency,’ or FTBA, is not a government agency. In fact, it is a scam designed to take advantage of unsuspecting individuals. The flyers, which have been circulating in the Greensboro area, are an attempt to spread misinformation and deceive the public.
U.S. Attorney Martin urges the public not to rely on the information contained in these postings and flyers and to visit http://www.ADA.gov for official information about the Americans with Disabilities Act. For more information and technical assistance about the ADA, please contact the ADA Information Line at 800-514-0301 (voice) and 800-514-0383 (TTY).
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends wearing cloth facial coverings in areas where social distancing guidelines may be difficult to maintain, especially in areas of significant community-based transition.
The year 2020 marks the 150th anniversary of the Department of Justice’s predecessor. Learn more about the history of the agency at www.Justice.gov/Celebrating150Years.
The public is warned to be vigilant and not to fall prey to these scams. Remember, if it seems too good (or in this case, too easy) to be true, it probably is. Stay safe, and stay informed.
