Jessica L. Voss, Failure to Pay Child Support, California 2012

Failure to pay child support has landed a Perham, Minnesota woman in hot water. Jessica L. Voss, 28, was indicted by a federal grand jury on October 10, 2012 for failing to pay over $19,085.00 in past due child support.

The investigation into Voss’s actions is being conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General. Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas J. Wright is prosecuting the case.

Voss appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge William D. Gerdes on March 19, 2013, where she pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a serious two years imprisonment, a hefty $250,000.00 fine, one year supervised release, one additional year upon revocation, a $100.00 assessment fee, and child support restitution amount owing at the time of sentencing.

The charge against Voss is merely an accusation, and she is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. She was released on bond pending trial, which has been set for May 21, 2013.

An indictment is a formal accusation of a crime, and it does not necessarily mean that the defendant is guilty. However, it does mean that the grand jury has determined that there is enough evidence to proceed with the case.

The investigation into Voss’s actions highlights the importance of paying child support. Failing to do so can have serious consequences, including imprisonment and fines. It is essential for parents to take their financial responsibilities seriously and make timely payments to support their children.

The case against Voss serves as a reminder that the law will not tolerate failure to pay child support. It is a serious issue that affects not only the parents involved but also the children who depend on them for financial support.
