Falsification of Union Records Lands Cameron Man in Hot Water

A 53-year-old Cameron, West Virginia resident has pleaded guilty to falsifying union records, leaving him facing up to 1 year in prison and a $100,000 fine.

Jeffrey Beresford entered a guilty plea on April 10, 2013, in United States District Court in Wheeling before Magistrate Judge James E. Seibert.

According to court documents, Beresford willfully falsified his Plumbers ALF-CIO Local Union mileage logs from April 2008 to January 2010. As part of his plea, he will make restitution in the amount of $4,507.75 to the Union.

United States Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld, II, announced the plea, which marks the culmination of an investigation by the United States Department of Labor-Office of Labor Management Standards.

Beresford, who is currently free on bond, will face sentencing at a later date. His plea deal includes the possibility of up to 1 year in prison and a $100,000 fine.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney David J. Perri. The charges against Beresford stem from a lengthy investigation into his activities as a union member.

The US Attorney’s Office has maintained that the falsification of union records is a serious offense that undermines the integrity of labor organizations.

Beresford’s plea deal serves as a warning to others who may be tempted to engage in similar behavior.
