RALEIGH – In a grim turn of justice, Ryan Detrell Robinson, 27, from Fayetteville, North Carolina, has been sentenced to 204 months in federal prison for his involvement in a violent firearms and drug crime spree.
The sentence was announced by United States Attorney Robert J. Higdon, Jr., with Judge James C. Dever III imposing the severe penalty. Robinson’s criminal activities included firing an assault weapon into the air during a dispute in Fayetteville, resulting in serious injuries to another individual. The incident took place on January 10, 2018, outside the Coliseum Inn.
Just two weeks later, on January 23, 2018, Robinson attempted to evade law enforcement by leading them on a high-speed chase through Fayetteville. During this pursuit, Robinson wrecked his vehicle and fled on foot before being captured. A firearm and cocaine were discovered in the vehicle.
Robinson faced multiple charges including being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession with intent to distribute cocaine. The court’s upward departure from the original sentence range of 57-71 months was based on his use of a dangerous weapon and the severe physical injuries caused to the victim during the initial shooting incident.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal initiative aimed at reducing violent crime. The United States Department of Justice has reinvigorated PSN since 2017, targeting violent criminals and collaborating with various law enforcement agencies. In North Carolina, the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina has implemented the ‘Take Back North Carolina Initiative,’ which focuses on regional partnerships to combat violent crime and drug trafficking.
The investigation into Robinson’s crimes was a collaborative effort by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, and the Fayetteville Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Donald R. Pender handled the prosecution for the government.
