Washington DC – The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) has released a doomsday forecast for the nation’s financial institutions, painting a bleak picture of economic turmoil in the 2024 stress testing scenarios.
The scenarios include a baseline and severely adverse scenario, both designed to test the resilience of financial institutions. The severely adverse scenario is not a prediction, but rather a worst-case scenario designed to push institutions to the breaking point. Each scenario includes 28 variables, covering everything from GDP and unemployment rates to stock market prices and interest rates.
The FDIC coordinated with the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in developing these scenarios. The release comes as Congress continues to grapple with financial regulations, and critics are already calling for greater oversight of the FDIC.
The 2010 Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act requires certain financial companies to conduct stress tests. In 2018, Congress increased the size of what is considered a covered institution from $10 billion to $250 billion.
According to sources, the scenarios are designed to be challenging, but not impossible to navigate. The baseline scenario is reportedly in line with a survey of private sector economic forecasters, while the severely adverse scenario is a worst-case scenario that pushes institutions to the limit.
As the financial industry continues to grapple with the implications of these scenarios, one thing is clear: the FDIC is taking a hard look at the nation’s financial institutions, and making no bones about it. With the release of these scenarios, the FDIC is sending a clear message to financial institutions: shape up, or ship out.
