Cedric E. Cundiff, a 68-year-old man from Massachusetts, pleaded guilty to assaulting a federal officer and failing to register as a sex offender in Syracuse, NY. In June 2025, Cundiff was charged with multiple felony offenses, including armed robbery, in Suffolk Superior Criminal Court in Massachusetts. After being released pending trial, he failed to appear in court and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Cundiff then fled to Syracuse, where he was eventually tracked down by the US Marshals Fugitive Task Force.
On January 29, 2026, Task Force members arrived at an apartment in Syracuse, where Cundiff was staying. When they knocked on the door, Cundiff answered and gave a false name before shutting the door and fleeing to a rear bedroom. As officers attempted to enter the bedroom, Cundiff slashed one of them with a knife, causing multiple lacerations and a fractured finger.
Cundiff’s guilty plea also included admitting to failing to register as a sex offender, which was required due to a 2005 Massachusetts conviction for aggravated rape. His plea was entered in federal court on June 29, 2026.
The case was announced by First Assistant United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III, Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent in Charge of the Albany Division Craig Tremaroli, and Christopher Amoia, U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of New York.
