Federal Agencies Fiddle with Small Business Loans
WASHINGTON – In a move that has left many critics scratching their heads, the federal bank regulatory agencies have released data on small business, small farm, and community development lending for 2024. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), Federal Reserve Board, and Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) claim the data is in line with their Community Reinvestment Act regulations, but some say it’s not enough.
The FDIC, Federal Reserve Board, and OCC, as members of the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC), released the data in a joint statement. The statement claims that the data is a result of their efforts to promote community development and small business lending.
‘The FFIEC also prepared aggregate reports of small business and small farm lending for each metropolitan statistical area and for each county in the United States and its territories,’ the statement reads. ‘The statements are available on the FFIEC’s website.’
But some critics say that the data is just a drop in the bucket, and that more needs to be done to support small businesses and community development. ‘This data release is just a Band-Aid on a much larger problem,’ said one critic. ‘We need real action, not just empty promises.’
The FFIEC’s website now contains the data tables and fact sheets, but critics say that even this is not enough. ‘We need to see tangible results, not just a bunch of numbers and statistics,’ said another critic. ‘We need to see real investment in our communities.’
When reached for comment, the FDIC, Federal Reserve Board, and OCC all said that they were committed to supporting small businesses and community development. ‘We are committed to our mission of promoting community development and small business lending,’ said a spokesperson for the FDIC. ‘We believe that this data release is an important step in that process.’
But for now, critics remain skeptical. ‘We’ll believe it when we see it,’ said one critic. ‘Until then, this data release is just a bunch of empty promises.’
The data release is just the latest in a long line of efforts by the federal bank regulatory agencies to promote community development and small business lending. But critics say that these efforts are just a drop in the bucket, and that more needs to be done to support small businesses and community development.
