Homemade Weapons Smuggled into Prison Land Two Inmates in Hot Water
SCRANTON, PA – In a shocking display of defiance, two federal inmates have been indicted for possessing homemade weapons, a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by prison authorities nationwide.
At the center of the scandal are 30-year-old Michael Thompson and 23-year-old James Bailey-Snyder, both inmates at the Schuylkill Federal Correctional Institution. According to sources, Thompson was caught with a homemade sharpened weapon, colloquially known as a ‘shank’, in January 2016, while Bailey-Snyder was found guilty of a similar offense that took place in August 2015.
Thompson’s alleged offense, which occurred over five years ago, could see him facing a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine of $250,000 if convicted. Similarly, Bailey-Snyder’s offense could net him the same maximum sentence and fine.
The investigations were conducted by the FBI, with Assistant United States Attorney Todd K. Hinkley assigned to the cases. Indictments and criminal informations are merely allegations, and both defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
While the statutory maximum penalty for the offense is 20 years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release, and a fine, the actual sentence will depend on various factors, including the nature of the offense, the defendant’s prior record, and the need to punish, protect, and rehabilitate.
The cases serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle to maintain order within the nation’s prison system. As the Grimy Times continues to shed light on these critical issues, one thing is clear: the possession of homemade weapons is a serious offense that will not be tolerated.
