Feds Fete Former Convicts
In a move that’s drawing both praise and skepticism, federal officials are set to honor a group of former prisoners in Syracuse, New York.
Tomorrow, April 28, 2016, United States Attorney Richard S. Hartunian and the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York will host an event to recognize the success of the Intensive Reentry Court. The court, aimed at helping prisoners reintegrate into society, has seen several of its graduates go on to become contributing members of the community.
The event, part of the DOJ’s Reentry Week, will take place at 11:00 am in the Ceremonial Courtroom of the Federal Courthouse in Syracuse. The ceremony is expected to feature a short video showcasing the program’s successes, as well as recognition for community stakeholders who have helped the former prisoners in their transition.
United States Attorney Richard S. Hartunian will be available for interviews following the conclusion of the event, which is expected to run until 12:30 pm. No further information will be provided prior to the event.
According to the invitation, the event is an opportunity to ‘recognize our partners, celebrating our successes.’ However, some critics have expressed concerns that the focus on rehabilitation may be misplaced, given the high recidivism rates among former prisoners.
The Intensive Reentry Court has been running for several years, with the aim of providing support and resources to prisoners as they transition back into society. The program has seen some success, but its long-term impact remains to be seen.
The event will take place at the Federal Courthouse, located at 100 S. Clinton Street in Syracuse, New York. The Ceremonial Courtroom is located on the 3rd floor.
