Elder Fraud Initiative, Nevada 2023

LAS VEGAS – A chilling wave of elder fraud is set to meet its match as the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada and the FBI Las Vegas Division roll out a bold new initiative. The Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Elder Justice Initiative will be showcased through an interactive telephone town hall on June 10, announced U.S. Attorney Nicholas A. Trutanich and Special Agent in Charge Aaron C. Rouse for the FBI.

Senior citizens are the prime targets of financial scams, but knowledge is their best defense. The DOJ, in partnership with the FBI and AARP Nevada, aims to educate Nevada’s seniors about the latest scams through a free telephone town hall scheduled for Monday, June 10, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. PDT.

The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) stands as a beacon of hope for the public, providing a reliable reporting mechanism for suspected internet criminal activity. In 2018 alone, the IC3 received over 351,000 complaints with losses exceeding $2.7 billion.

Joining the town hall is simple; register at .

The DOJ Elder Justice Initiative targets elder financial exploitation by enhancing investigation and prosecution efforts, educating older adults on spotting scams, and fostering better law enforcement coordination. To report elder fraud complaints, the Federal Trade Commission can be contacted at 1-877-FTC-HELP or online at www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov, while the IC3 is accessible at www.ic3.gov.
