Ahead of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada is intensifying efforts to tackle elder abuse and exploitation.
“Every year, millions of seniors fall victim to elder abuse, neglect, financial exploitation, or fraud,” said U.S. Attorney Jason M. Frierson.
The Elder Justice Initiative brings together law enforcement at all levels to combat these crimes, with a particular emphasis on transnational elder fraud schemes and romance scams.
Scammers often use money mules to move illegal proceeds, targeting older individuals with promises of financial gain. The Money Mule Initiative identifies these activities to disrupt fraud schemes.
The Justice Department offers Senior Scam Alerts to help seniors and their families identify fraudulent tactics, including Social Security Administration Impostor scams and Tech Support scams.
Through partnerships with law enforcement and community organizations, the U.S. Attorney’s Office educates on how to detect, prevent, and report elder fraud. Help is available at the National Elder Fraud Hotline: 1-833-FRAUD-11 (1-833-372-8311).
