Carl Baker, Possession of Child Pornography, Nevada 2024

RENO, NV – Carl Baker, 78, of Reno, will spend the next three years in federal prison after being sentenced Monday for sickening crimes against children. United States District Judge Anne R. Traum handed down a 36-month sentence, followed by a lifetime of supervised release, for possessing a staggering cache of child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

Court records detail how Baker actively sought out and possessed illicit images between December 11, 2022, and February 14, 2023. Investigators uncovered over 600 images on computers and hard drives linked to Baker, depicting minors younger than 12 years of age. The sheer volume of depravity speaks to a calculated and disturbing pattern of behavior.

Baker pleaded guilty in January 2024 to one count of possession of child pornography. This wasn’t a case of accidental exposure; it was deliberate acquisition and retention of horrific content. The plea, while avoiding a trial, doesn’t lessen the gravity of the offense. He’ll be a registered sex offender for life, subject to constant monitoring and scrutiny upon his release.

“The exploitation of children is a heinous crime that we will continue to aggressively pursue,” stated United States Attorney Jason M. Frierson. Special Agent in Charge Spencer L. Evans of the FBI added that the investigation highlights the ongoing threat posed by online predators. The FBI, along with the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, worked tirelessly to bring Baker to justice.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Penelope Brady and Richard Casper skillfully prosecuted the case, building a solid legal foundation for the conviction. This case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006, designed to dismantle networks of child exploitation and rescue victims. Resources are pooled from federal, state, and local agencies to maximize impact.

The sentencing of Carl Baker serves as a stark reminder of the dark underbelly of the internet and the importance of vigilance. Those with information regarding suspected child exploitation are urged to contact the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children or their local law enforcement agency.
