Melvin Nelson, a 42-year-old St Louis County resident, was caught twice with guns and large quantities of methamphetamine and fentanyl. On September 4, 2024, and again on August 26, 2025, law enforcement searched his home, finding handguns, rifles, body armor, and hundreds of grams of narcotics. The investigations were led by the Florissant Police Department, St Louis County Police Department, US Marshals Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Nelson pleaded guilty in April to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession of firearms in furtherance of a drug crime, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The searches of his home uncovered a staggering amount of drugs, including at least 219 grams of methamphetamine and 500 grams of a fentanyl mixture.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant US Attorney Ricardo Dixon, resulting in a 10-year prison sentence for Nelson. US District Judge Matthew T Schelp handed down the sentence, bringing an end to Nelson’s illicit activities in St Louis County.
The sentencing highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking in the region. The collaboration between local and federal agencies has led to the dismantling of several drug operations in recent years, with Nelson’s case being the latest example.
