Felon Caught with Ammunition on St. Thomas

Rudy Bridges, a 31-year-old St. Thomas resident, was taken into custody today in District Court on the island for an advice of rights hearing following his arrest for being a felon in possession of ammunition, announced United States Attorney Ronald W. Sharpe.

The federal indictment against Bridges stems from an incident on April 18, 2013, when he allegedly possessed ammunition despite being a convicted felon. Under federal law, a person convicted of being a felon in possession of ammunition faces a sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Bridges’ case began in 2014 with a one-count indictment handed down by a federal grand jury on November 6. The indictment charges him with being a felon in possession of ammunition, a serious offense that carries significant penalties.

It is essential to note that an indictment is merely a charging document and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty, and Bridges has yet to enter a plea in the case.

The investigation into Bridges’ activities is being led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD). Assistant U.S. Attorney Ishmael Meyers, Jr. is handling the prosecution of the case.

Bridges was released on his personal recognizance after his arrest, but his freedom is likely to be short-lived if he is convicted of the charges against him.
