Nathaniel Jay Brown, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Virginia 2023

A convicted felon in Richmond, Virginia, has been sentenced to two years and three months in prison for being caught with a firearm, violating federal law.

Nathaniel Jay Brown, 35, of Richmond, was pulled over by Henrico County Police officers on September 5, 2023, for committing traffic infractions. During the traffic stop, Brown indicated he was in possession of a firearm, and a .380 caliber semiautomatic handgun with a fully loaded magazine was retrieved from his waistband.

Brown’s history as a convicted felon makes it illegal for him to possess a firearm. At the time of the incident, he had multiple felony convictions, including a 2013 conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, led by Jessica D. Aber, announced the sentencing after U.S. District Judge David J. Novak handed down the sentence. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Patrick J. McGorman and Stephen E. Anthony prosecuted the case.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Henrico County Police Division also played a role in the investigation and prosecution of Brown.

Brown’s sentence highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address the issue of felons possessing firearms and preventing them from committing further crimes.
