Mar’yo Doyuan Lindsey, a 26-year-old from Waterloo, Iowa, has been sentenced to over five years in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a felon.
Lindsey, a convicted felon, was caught with a high-capacity magazine loaded with ammunition for a Canik firearm on July 3, 2020, during a traffic stop by the Iowa State Patrol. Lindsey was a front-seat passenger in the vehicle and had a baggie of marijuana protruding from his pants pocket.
On July 12, 2020, Lindsey was found in a car by the Waterloo Police Department Violent Crime Apprehension team during an unrelated firearms investigation, in possession of a loaded Canik firearm that fit the magazine seized nine days earlier.
Lindsey pleaded guilty to the charge in a plea agreement on March 18, 2021, and was subsequently sentenced to 70 months’ imprisonment by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams in Cedar Rapids. Lindsey will also have to serve a three-year term of supervised release after completing his prison sentence.
Lindsey is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime through community involvement and enforcement efforts. PSN focuses on identifying and addressing the most pressing violent crime problems in a community and developing comprehensive solutions to address them.
Assistant United States Attorney Patrick J. Reinert prosecuted the case, with the Waterloo Police Department, the Iowa State Patrol, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducting the investigation.
