Felon Caught with Firearms
A Fort Thompson man has been brought to justice for a serious crime. Bryant Ross, 39, was sentenced to 9 months of imprisonment and 18 months of supervised release for Felon in Possession of Firearm.
On February 23, 2013, a Bureau of Indian Affairs Officer made contact with Ross in the Old Fort campground area off of Highway 47. An active tribal warrant was discovered, and during his arrest, two firearms were found in Ross’ possession.
Ross’ history of crime caught up with him when he was convicted of Possession of a Controlled Substance-Meth in 1998, making him a prohibited person. This conviction led to his indictment by a federal grand jury on July 16, 2013.
Ross pleaded guilty on August 29, 2013, to the charge of Felon in Possession of Firearm. He was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on November 20, 2013.
Ross was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuting the case.
Ross was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following his sentencing. The case serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of breaking the law, particularly for those with a history of crime.
This incident highlights the importance of law enforcement working together to keep our communities safe. The efforts of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the U.S. Marshals Service are to be commended in bringing Bryant Ross to justice.
