A convicted felon from Fort Lauderdale is facing serious charges after being caught in possession of a firearm and ammunition in Fort Myers, Florida.

Cambrel Jamal Smart (28, Fort Lauderdale) was indicted for possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon, a federal crime that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison.

According to the indictment, Smart was in possession of a firearm and ammunition on January 5, 2022. At the time of the incident, Smart had previous felony convictions for robbery with a firearm, false imprisonment, attempted murder in the second degree, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

As a previously convicted felon, Smart is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition under federal law.

The indictment notifies Smart that the United States intends to forfeit the firearm and ammunition traceable to the offense.

An indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed one or more violations of federal criminal law, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Fort Myers Police Department. It will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Trent Reiching.

This case is being prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, the centerpiece of the violent crime reduction efforts.
