WASHINGTON – A District of Columbia man was sentenced to 36-months in prison today for a brazen daylight shooting involving the use of a stolen pistol. Convicted felon Dewayne Keith Miles, 29, faced federal charges after firing the gun into the air 13 times in a residential neighborhood, announced U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.
Miles, who had already pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon on June 30, was also ordered by Judge John D. Bates to serve an additional 3 years of supervised release following his prison term.
The prosecution against Miles is part of the Make D.C. Safe Again initiative, a program dedicated to reducing violent crime and addressing gun violence in the District. The initiative prioritizes federal firearms violations and seeks tougher penalties for offenders.
According to court documents, on March 15, 2025, Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officers were investigating a robbery when they heard multiple gunshots. They located Miles at the 4600 block of Benning Road, SE, holding a Smith & Wesson, SD9 pistol above his head and firing it into the air.
Miles fled but was eventually captured by police. Thirteen cartridge casings were found on the street, while a nearby curb yielded the stolen firearm. During a search at the cell block, officers discovered Miles in possession of live ammunition consistent with that used during the shooting.
This case was investigated by MPD with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Washington Field Division. Assistant U.S. Attorney Emory V. Cole prosecuted the case.
