Kelly Shadrone Anderson, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, North Carolina 2016

GREENVILLE – A Wilson man has been convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm after holding a three year old hostage, according to a statement from Robert J. Higdon, Jr., United States Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina.

A federal jury found Kelly Shadrone Anderson, 33, guilty of the crime after a two-day trial before Senior United States District Judge Malcolm J. Howard.

The evidence presented at trial showed that on September 24, 2016, the Wilson Police Department responded to a burglary in progress at a residence on 716 Harper Street in Wilson.

The resident of the home reported that she was sitting on her front porch with a friend when Anderson ran towards her with a firearm. Anderson entered the residence, locked the front door, and held the three year old hostage inside.

Anderson later surrendered and the firearm he brandished was found inside the residence.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer for everyone. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF) and the Wilson Police Department.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions reinvigorated the program in 2017 as part of the Department’s renewed focus on targeting violent criminals.

Anderson’s conviction marks a significant blow to violent crime in the community. His sentencing is pending.
