A 23-year-old DC felon is headed to the slammer for 40 months after getting caught with a loaded revolver in his waistband. Kiyel Kearney’s status as a convicted felon meant he was already barred from owning a gun. But that didn’t stop him.
On May 10, 2025, around 11:45 p.m., police responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 1200 block of Harvard Street NW. That’s where they spotted a gray Acura speeding and blowing through a red light. The vehicle crashed, and Kearney bailed with three others.
Police gave chase, watching as Kearney ran with one hand free and the other clutched at his waist. He slipped, fell, and surrendered to officers. A search revealed a semiautomatic Glock 33 .357 caliber pistol with 14 rounds of ammo.
Kearney pleaded guilty on January 16, 2026, to unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon. In addition to his prison sentence, he’ll serve two years of supervised release.
