Felon Sentenced to 70 Months for Gun Offense

A Robeson County man has been sentenced to 70 months in prison for a firearm offense. Corey Elton Jones, 39, was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

According to court documents, Jones was less than a year into a 30-month term of probation when he was arrested in 2018. He had previously pleaded guilty to a number of state charges, including a felony charge for Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.

On December 19, 2018, state probation officers and the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search of Jones’ residence. A fully loaded .40 caliber handgun was found in a dresser drawer, along with a bag of ammunition and a .22 caliber rifle in the closet of Jones’ bedroom.

After his arrest, Jones waived his Miranda rights and admitted to possessing the handgun. He subsequently pleaded guilty to the charge on October 31, 2019.

The case was investigated by the ATF, Robeson County Sheriff’s Office, and North Carolina Department of Public Safety, Division of Adult Corrections Probation/Parole. Assistant U.S. Attorney Bryan Stephany prosecuted the case.

U.S. Attorney Robert J. Higdon, Jr. announced the sentencing after it was handed down by U.S. District Judge James C. Dever III. The case is part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program, which aims to reduce violent crime and make neighborhoods safer.

Jones will also serve three years of supervised release after completing his prison sentence. The case is a reminder of the importance of enforcing gun laws and keeping communities safe from firearms.
