Felon Sentenced to 9 Years for Possession of Firearms

A Parkersburg man with a history of violent crime has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison for possessing firearms, a crime he’s not allowed to commit due to his previous felony convictions.

Casey Douglas Saunders, 30, was sentenced to 108 months in prison for being a felon in possession of firearms. Saunders had three semi-automatic pistols and one semi-automatic rifle in his home on Camden Avenue in Parkersburg when law enforcement officers arrived to arrest him on an outstanding warrant for violating his parole.

According to court documents, Saunders had absconded from parole after serving time for previous felony convictions in Wood County Circuit Court for burglary, delivery of a controlled substance, and escape. His escape conviction was particularly egregious, as he stole and fled in a police officer’s vehicle when the officer attempted to arrest him on an outstanding warrant.

U.S. Attorney Lisa G. Johnston praised the investigative work of the Parkersburg Violent Crimes and Narcotics Task Force, the United States Marshals Service (USMS), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Parkersburg Police Department for their role in Saunders’ arrest and conviction.

United States District Judge Irene C. Berger imposed the sentence, which is a result of a plea agreement and statements made in court. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeremy B. Wolfe handled the prosecution.

The case is a reminder that possessing firearms while a convicted felon is a serious offense, and those who commit such crimes will face severe penalties. As the investigation into Saunders’ crimes continues, it’s clear that law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to keep our communities safe from violent crime.
