Presho Man Guilty of Gun Charges
A 36-year-old man from Presho, South Dakota has pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm as a convicted felon and drug user. Clint Brown appeared before U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on April 1, 2013, and admitted to the charges.
The maximum penalty for Brown’s conviction could be 10 years in custody, a $250,000 fine, or both. He also faces three years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment.
Brown’s guilty plea comes after he was arrested by state authorities on August 17, 2012, and found to be in possession of two firearms – a 12-gauge shotgun and a 22-caliber rifle. Investigators also discovered that he had been using methamphetamine and had numerous items of drug paraphernalia in his Lyman County home.
The investigation into Brown’s activities involved several agencies, including the Lyman County Sheriff’s Office, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigations, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Timothy M. Maher and Kathryn Rich.
A presentence investigation has been ordered, and Brown’s sentencing date has been set for June 12, 2013. He has been remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending sentencing.
Brown’s guilty plea also brings state charges against him in Lyman County related to the August 17, 2012, arrest. The investigation is ongoing, and it remains to be seen what additional charges Brown may face.
The full scope of Brown’s crimes is not yet clear, but one thing is certain: his guilty plea is a significant blow to those who would seek to possess firearms while breaking the law.
