A shooting outside a downtown Salt Lake City bar on March 14, 2026, has led to the indictment of Angelo Mark Garcia, 40, for allegedly possessing a firearm as a restricted person. Garcia, a previously convicted felon, is accused of opening fire outside the bar at approximately 1:15 a.m., injuring two people. The incident occurred near a downtown Salt Lake City bar, and Garcia was stopped by a Utah Highway Patrol trooper shortly after for a traffic violation.
During the stop, the trooper noticed Garcia and his passenger had red-brown stains on their clothing and appeared to have been in a recent altercation. A preliminary search of the vehicle revealed a firearm underneath the front passenger seat, which was later identified as a Glock 19 9mm semi-automatic pistol. Multiple 9mm casings were also recovered at the scene of the shooting.
Garcia’s initial appearance on the indictment is scheduled for April 3, 2026, at 1:15 p.m. in courtroom 8.4 before a U.S. Magistrate Judge at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City. As a previously convicted felon, Garcia is restricted from owning or possessing a firearm and ammunition, and he now faces charges for felon in possession of a firearm.
The case was announced by First Assistant United States Attorney Melissa Holyoak of the District of Utah. The incident is a reminder of the dangers of firearm crime and the importance of enforcing laws that restrict access to firearms for individuals with a history of violence or felony convictions.
