CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A convicted felon is behind bars after being sentenced to 46 months in prison for illegal firearm possession, announced U.S. Attorney Dena J. King for the Western District of North Carolina.
Deddrick Ray Ervin, 35, of Charlotte, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Robert J. Conrad Jr. on Monday. Ervin is facing two years of supervised release following his prison stint. The conviction stems from a December 2022 incident where law enforcement encountered Ervin while patrolling a high-crime area in Charlotte.
According to court records, law enforcement attempted to stop Ervin’s vehicle but he failed to comply. Ervin was later found hiding in a shed and arrested. A search of the shed revealed a backpack containing fentanyl, methamphetamine, and marijuana, as well as a firearm.
Ervin’s prior conviction for felon in possession of a firearm in Georgia and a South Carolina state conviction for kidnapping make him prohibited from owning a firearm. His guilty plea to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon was entered on August 8, 2023.
U.S. Attorney King thanked the ATF and CMPD for their investigation into the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Alfredo De La Rosa prosecuted the case. The conviction is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through community-based initiatives and focused enforcement.
Project Safe Neighborhoods is a program that brings together law enforcement and community organizations to prevent violence and reduce gun crime. The Department’s violent crime reduction strategy, launched in 2021, sets focused and strategic enforcement priorities and measures results. Ervin is in federal custody and will be transferred to the Bureau of Prisons upon designation of a federal facility.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney King praised the efforts of law enforcement agencies in the case, saying, ‘We are committed to keeping our communities safe and holding accountable those who break the law.’ The case is a testament to the effectiveness of the Project Safe Neighborhoods program in reducing violent crime and gun violence.
