Felony Firearm Possession Lands Westwego Man 37 Months

NEW ORLEANS – A local man has been sentenced to 37 months in prison for being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm, announced the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

Terrell Richardson, 37, of Westwego, Louisiana, was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Martin L. C. Feldman for the crime. In addition to the prison term, Richardson was ordered to serve three years of supervised release and pay a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.

The case began when Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s deputies stopped Richardson after he committed a traffic violation on N. Causeway Blvd. in Metairie, Louisiana. During the stop, law enforcement smelled marijuana and proceeded to search Richardson’s vehicle. They discovered a reportedly stolen and loaded, SCCY Industries Model CPX-2, nine-millimeter caliber semi-automatic firearm, bearing serial number 192060.

The firearm was found in possession of Richardson, who had been convicted of a federal felony offense on January 22, 2002. This conviction made him a prohibited person from possessing a firearm.

This case is being prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, a program aimed at reducing violent crime. PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.

The matter was handled by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, along with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Duane A. Evans is prosecuting the case.

The Project Safe Neighborhoods Program has proven to be effective in reducing violent crime. By working together, federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies can identify the most pressing crime problems in the community and develop comprehensive solutions to address them.
