Felony Firearms Charges for 6 in Savannah

Six defendants in Savannah, Georgia, face felony firearms charges following a federal indictment by a U.S. District Court grand jury in the Southern District of Georgia. The investigation was led by federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the FBI.

According to Acting U.S. Attorney David H. Estes, the enforcement of existing firearms laws is crucial to keeping streets safe. Over the past three years, more than 680 defendants have been federally charged in the Southern District of Georgia for illegal firearms offenses. Most of these charges were for possessing a firearm after having been convicted of a previous felony, which carries a statutory penalty of up to 10 years in prison with no parole.

The defendants named in federal indictments include John W. Carter, 36, of Rincon, Georgia, who is charged with Possession with Intent to Distribute Heroin and Marijuana, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Crime. Other defendants include Antoine Ladson, 32, of Brunswick, who faces charges of Possession with Intent to Distribute Fentanyl, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Crime.

Additionally, Jamar Lavelle Alexander, 34, of Crawfordville, Georgia, is charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, while Timothy Lee Cheeks, 33, of Augusta, faces charges of Possession of Ammunition by a Convicted Felon. David Bryson Murphy, 20, of Thomson, is charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Christopher Lewis Tucker Jr., 21, of Thomson, is charged with False Statement During Purchase of a Firearm and Receipt of a Firearm by a Person Under Indictment.

Separately, several defendants have recently pleaded guilty to charges of illegal firearms possession, including Marcus Rashad Allen, 33, of Savannah, who awaits sentencing after pleading guilty to Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. Savannah Police officers found Allen in possession of a pistol in August 2020 after he ran from officers attempting to arrest him on an outstanding warrant.

The cases are ongoing, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. The investigation highlights the importance of enforcing existing firearms laws to keep communities safe.
