Felony Fugitive Tries to Sneak Back In
Fernando DeAzevedo Melo, a 46-year-old citizen of Portugal, has pleaded guilty to attempting to re-enter the United States following a subsequent felony conviction.
Melo, who faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000, made his attempt to re-enter at the Rainbow Bridge on June 30, 2014.
As a convicted felon, Melo needed permission to reapply for admission into the United States. However, it appears that he chose to take matters into his own hands.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Marie P. Grisanti, who is handling the case, stated that the investigation is a culmination of an investigation on the part of Customs and Border Protection, under the direction of Randy Howe, Director of Field Operations.
The U.S. Attorney’s office has announced that sentencing is scheduled for March 6, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. before Judge Richard J. Arcara.
It remains to be seen what the consequences will be for Melo’s actions. One thing is certain, however: he will be held accountable for his attempts to circumvent the law.
