David Watkins, a 31-year-old Memphis man, has been sentenced to 81 months in federal prison for his role in a string of crimes, including aggravated identity theft, bank fraud, and illegally possessing a firearm. The crimes occurred in Memphis, Tennessee, and surrounding areas, with the first reported incident happening on June 28, 2022, at Keytrader, an automotive locksmith business in Bartlett. Watkins and his accomplices stole various equipment and key fobs, but one suspect dropped a cell phone, which ultimately led investigators to Watkins.

As investigators dug deeper, they found that Watkins had used personal identifying information of various individuals to create fraudulent bank accounts and made unauthorized withdrawals from victims’ accounts. He also possessed numerous counterfeit and unauthorized social security numbers with the intent to commit further fraud. On July 27, 2022, police located Watkins at a Memphis residence, where he fled on foot, dropping a bag containing a firearm, key programmers, and other stolen items.

The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Bartlett Police Department, the United States Postal Inspection Service, and the Social Security Administration. The case highlights the growing concern of identity theft and bank fraud in the United States. Watkins’ sentence reflects the severity of his crimes and serves as a warning to others who engage in similar activities.

Watkins’ crimes were not limited to identity theft and bank fraud. He also possessed a firearm, which is a serious offense for a convicted felon. The sentence of 81 months in federal prison will provide time for Watkins to reflect on his actions and provide justice for the victims of his crimes.
