A brazen scheme to rob United States Postal Service carriers and cash in on the loot with bank fraud landed a Memphis man and his mother behind bars. Marshun Lewis, 25, was sentenced to 42 years in prison for a string of armed robberies in Western Tennessee.
Between August 2023 and December 2024, Lewis, a masked gunman, targeted postal carriers to get keys to unlock blue collection mailboxes in Memphis. He used these keys to steal checks and money orders, which he then altered and deposited into third-party accounts.
Lewis’s mother, Lakita Carroll, 46, got caught up in the scheme by depositing stolen checks and money orders into her bank account. She pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud and bank fraud.
US Postal Inspectors tracked Lewis’s vehicle to the scene of the robberies and found stolen mail and a keychain at his home. Text messages on his phone linked him to each robbery and co-conspirators in the bank fraud scheme.
The total amount of stolen checks and money orders exceeded $940,000. Lewis was also convicted of robbery, brandishing a firearm, conspiracy, and possession of stolen mail.
