Fentanyl Dealers Face Justice in Kentucky Court

In a major blow to the opioid epidemic, two residents of Michigan and Ohio have been sentenced to federal prison for their role in a fentanyl conspiracy. Demetre Brown-Lovelace, 27, of Belleville, Mich., and Noelle Tufts, 24, of Ironton, Ohio, were handed down a combined 15-year prison sentence by United States District Judge David L. Bunning.

The prosecution involved over 200 grams of the powerful and deadly opioid, with Brown-Lovelace and Tufts admitting to conspiring with others to distribute the substance in April 2017. Brown-Lovelace had a prior conviction for trafficking in a controlled substance, heroin, from the Boyd Circuit Court in April 2016.

Under federal law, Brown-Lovelace must serve 85 percent of his 10-year prison sentence, while Tufts will serve 85 percent of her 5-year sentence. Upon their release, they will be under the supervision of the United States Probation Office for eight years and four years, respectively.

The investigation was a joint effort between the FBI, Huntington, WV Resident Agency and the Kentucky State Police. The United States was represented by Assistant United States Attorney Cynthia T. Rieker.

A total of 209 grams of fentanyl was involved in the conspiracy, a staggering amount that highlights the dangers of this highly potent opioid. The sentencing of Brown-Lovelace and Tufts serves as a warning to those involved in the opioid trade that they will be held accountable for their actions.

The opioid epidemic has ravaged communities across the country, and the sentencing of these two individuals is a step in the right direction towards combating this crisis. Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
