Welfare Fraud Lands Pine Ridge Woman in Hot Water
Natalie White Plume, a 36-year-old resident of Pine Ridge, South Dakota, has been sentenced for making false statements on applications for aid. White Plume, also known as Natalie Lame, was handed a 2-year probation sentence by Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court, on June 11, 2013.
According to court documents, White Plume failed to disclose all of her income on her Economic Assistance Application for Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) and in her application for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Her actions earned her a hefty price tag, with the court ordering her to pay $15,611 in restitution and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The charges against White Plume stem from an indictment by a federal grand jury on November 19, 2012. She pled guilty to the charge on March 8, 2013. The case was thoroughly investigated by the South Dakota Department of Social Services.
The South Dakota U.S. Attorney’s Office announced the sentencing, with U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson commending the efforts of those involved in bringing White Plume to justice. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of honesty and transparency in government aid programs.
White Plume’s actions not only compromised the integrity of the system but also wasted valuable resources that could have been allocated to those in true need. Her sentence sends a clear message that fraudulent activity will not be tolerated.
The investigation and subsequent prosecution of White Plume demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies to uphold the law and protect the public trust.
The case is a stark reminder that those who attempt to defraud the system will face consequences. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that those who abuse the system are held accountable.
