A Sioux Falls man was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for distributing fentanyl that resulted in serious bodily injury to a victim.
Ignacio Joaquim Veytia, 24, was found guilty of Distribution of a Controlled Substance Resulting in Death or Serious Bodily Injury.
According to court documents, on June 18, 2019, Veytia knowingly and intentionally distributed fentanyl to the victim, who smoked the substance and sustained an overdose. Fortunately, the administration of Narcan reversed the overdose.
Veytia was indicted by a federal grand jury on October 6, 2020, and pled guilty on April 21, 2021.
The conviction stemmed from an investigation by the Sioux Falls Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer D. Mammenga prosecuted the case.
Veytia was sentenced to 240 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.
Veytia was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
The severe consequences of Veytia’s actions serve as a stark reminder of the dangers of fentanyl and the importance of holding individuals accountable for their role in the opioid epidemic.
