Luis Leon, Fentanyl Trafficking, Rhode Island 2019

PROVIDENCE – Luis Leon, a 25-year-old Pawtucket resident, has been sent to federal prison for ten years following his conviction on fentanyl and cocaine trafficking charges. The sentence was announced by United States Attorney Aaron L. Weisman and Joseph R. Bonavolonta of the FBI Boston Division.

In early April 2019, the FBI Safe Streets Task Force had surveillance on Leon’s residence when he fled with a large duffel bag containing drugs. After a high-speed chase and accident, Leon abandoned his truck and escaped, only to be captured later in Fall River, RI.

Leon pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl and cocaine on May 14, 2019. Assistant U.S. Attorney Gerard B. Sullivan prosecuted the case, which was handled by the Rhode Island FBI Safe Streets Gang Task Force.

The task force includes agents from various local law enforcement agencies and the Rhode Island National Guard. Leon’s sentence of 120 months will be followed by five years of supervised release.

Leon’s capture and conviction underscore the efforts of federal and local law enforcement to combat drug trafficking in Rhode Island.
