Halifax County’s streets ran red with a deadly threat last year. Lorenizo Reshaud Simmons, 33, peddled over 40 grams of fentanyl, a toxic cocktail that can kill in mere seconds. The convicted felon had a history of dealing opioids and oxycodone. His game was simple: profit off the addiction of his own community.
His operation was sloppy. In August 2022, the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation after complaints flooded in about drug activity in Garysburg. The HCSO, with the SBI’s help, made three controlled buys of Simmons’ fentanyl. On May 4, 2023, the HCSO and Northampton County Sheriff’s Office raided Simmons’ house, finding a staggering 300 grams of a fentanyl analogue, along with morphine, a digital scale, and enough ammo to arm a small army.
Simmons’ reign of terror was short-lived. U.S. District Judge Louise W. Flanagan sentenced him to over 6 years in federal prison. U.S. Attorney Ellis Boyle slammed Simmons, saying, ‘Fentanyl kills kids. This repeat offender should have learned his lesson before, but he returned to this shameful exploitation of his own community.’
The sentence sends a clear message: in Eastern North Carolina, dealing fentanyl will not be tolerated. Simmons’ case serves as a stark reminder that prison awaits those who peddle death in our streets.
