A California-based meth and fentanyl ring got a taste of its own poison when Fortunato Beltran, 45, was sentenced to 31 years in federal prison for orchestrating bulk shipments of the deadly drugs into Eastern North Carolina.
Beltran’s operation, which shipped in over $100,000 worth of meth and fentanyl, was dismantled after a joint investigation by the ATF and DEA. Agents purchased 35 pounds of meth and almost seven pounds of fentanyl from Beltran’s organization in 2024.
Beltran’s crimes left a trail of devastation in his wake, and U.S. Attorney Ellis Boyle made it clear that the justice system will not tolerate such behavior. ‘Fentanyl kills everyone, especially our kids,’ Boyle said. ‘This California thug brought his Mexican poison here to kill children in our communities.’
ATF Special Agent in Charge Alicia Jones echoed Boyle’s sentiments, adding that drug trafficking creates a cycle of violence in communities that often includes illegal firearm use and possession. The coordinated efforts of local, state, and federal law enforcement partners helped to break up Beltran’s operation and make the neighborhoods safer.
