The Southern District of California is a prime entry point for smugglers, thanks to a 140-mile border with Mexico and the bustling San Ysidro Port of Entry, the world’s busiest land border crossing.
On March 29, two Mexican nationals, Alfredo Chavez Montoya and Claudia Patricia Rivera, were arrested and charged with Importation of a Controlled Substance after CBP officers found 113 pounds of cocaine hidden in their vehicle. The next day, a U.S. citizen, Frances Goenett, was busted for smuggling 102 pounds of methamphetamine and three pounds of fentanyl through the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
Gonzalo Vargas-Castaneda, a Mexican citizen, was also arrested and charged with Attempted Entry After Deportation on April 1.
