Rayshawn Smith, a 31-year-old St. Petersburg man, has been charged in connection with the fentanyl overdose of a 1-year-old child who was in his care. The incident occurred on November 13, 2025, and the child had to undergo life-saving measures at the hospital. Smith, who has been selling various kinds of drugs including methamphetamine and fentanyl to a confidential informant between May 13, 2025, and January 14, 2026, was arrested after law enforcement executed a search warrant at his residence.
According to the complaint, Smith’s arrest was the result of a joint investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the St. Petersburg Police Department. The investigation led to the recovery of drugs, guns, and drug paraphernalia from Smith’s residence and vehicle. Smith faces a maximum penalty of life in federal prison if convicted on all counts.
The case against Smith is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Yara Dodin. U.S. Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe announced the charges, which include distribution of a controlled substance resulting in great bodily injury, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, drug distribution, and possession of a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon.
Smith’s alleged crimes have sparked outrage and concern in the community, highlighting the dangers of fentanyl and the importance of holding those responsible for its distribution accountable. The investigation and prosecution of Smith’s case serve as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and protect public safety.
