BOSTON – A brazen fentanyl trafficking operation has been brought to a screeching halt with the arrest of Junior Baez Sanchez, a 28-year-old Dominican national. Baez Sanchez was taken into custody yesterday on charges of distributing more than 40 grams of the deadly synthetic opioid.
According to the indictment, Baez Sanchez was responsible for distributing more than 40 grams of fentanyl in Chelsea on June 2, 2020 and in Malden on July 15, 2020. The charges carry a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and up to 40 years in prison, a minimum of four years and up to a lifetime of supervised release and a fine of up to $5 million.
Acting United States Attorney Nathaniel R. Mendell praised the collaborative effort that led to Baez Sanchez’s arrest. "This case is a testament to the tireless work of law enforcement agencies in the Commonwealth," Mendell said. "We will continue to work together to disrupt and dismantle the networks that peddle this poison."
Special Agent in Charge Kelly D. Brady of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, Boston Field Division, added, "The distribution of fentanyl is a deadly business, and we will not hesitate to take action against those who engage in it."
Baez Sanchez was detained following an initial appearance today before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jennifer C. Boal pending a detention hearing scheduled for April 26, 2021. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles Dell’Anno of Mendell’s Major Crimes Unit.
The details contained in the indictment are allegations, and Baez Sanchez is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles Dell’Anno expressed his appreciation for the support of the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office and Massachusetts State Police in the investigation. "Their expertise and resources were invaluable in bringing this case to fruition," Dell’Anno said.
