Ferguson Police Under Fire

By R. Jenkins, Crime Reporter for Grimy Times

The community of Ferguson, Missouri, is still reeling from the shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown, and now the Justice Department is taking a closer look at the city’s police force.

According to a statement from Justice Department spokeswoman Dena Iverson, senior officials, including Acting Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Molly Moran and Deputy Assistant Attorney General Mark Kappelhoff, visited Ferguson on Thursday and Friday to meet with city and police leadership.

As part of the Civil Rights Division’s ongoing pattern and practice investigation into the Ferguson Police Department, Moran and Kappelhoff met with FPD leadership to discuss the identification of officers and uniform requirements, following up on letters sent to Police Chief Jackson.

The investigation is part of the department’s commitment to a thorough and fair probe into the FPD’s practices, which have been criticized for their handling of the Michael Brown case.

During their visit, Moran, Davis, and Kappelhoff were joined by the Community Relations Service in a meeting with community leaders regarding the pattern and practice investigation. There will be additional opportunities for community members to meet with Civil Rights Division staff in the near future.

While in St. Louis, the Civil Rights Division leadership also received an update from the FBI, Civil Rights Division, and U.S. Attorney’s Office investigators on the continuing investigation into the shooting of Michael Brown.

Attorney General Eric Holder requested the visit, and the FBI, Civil Rights Division, and U.S. Attorney’s Office are all involved in the ongoing investigation.

As the investigation unfolds, the community of Ferguson remains on edge, waiting for answers and justice for the family of Michael Brown.
