Keith Smith, Methamphetamine Trafficking, Michigan 2024

GRAND RAPIDS – The grim reaper of Kalamazoo streets, Keith Smith, 46, has been locked away for 30 years in federal prison. The U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan, Timothy VerHey, delivered the devastating sentence for Smith’s relentless methamphetamine trafficking.

“A thirty-year sentence is a long time,” VerHey remarked, “but Keith Smith worked hard to earn it. His drug-dealing activities were responsible for taking lives in Kalamazoo.”

In 2022, law enforcement stumbled upon the grim truth of Smith’s operation during a sting operation where a confidential informant purchased a pound of meth from him. A subsequent search of Smith’s home unearthed a woman dead from drug poisoning and over two kilograms of meth. His car held fentanyl, cocaine, and a stolen pistol.

Smith, who already had numerous state court convictions for dealing drugs, continued his illegal endeavors under federal supervision. On January 13, 2025, police apprehended him with more than 13 pounds of meth. Smith was classified as a career offender due to his extensive criminal history, including over ten felony convictions.

Captain Michael Ferguson of the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team (KVET) echoed VerHey’s sentiments: “Mr. Smith is a career criminal. We hope this sentence sends a message.” Special Agent in Charge Andrew Lawton highlighted the DEA’s collaboration with KVET and the U.S. Postal Inspectors Service, emphasizing the removal of a violent threat from Michigan communities.

This case was a collaborative effort between KVET, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Austin Hakes, Dan McGraw, Jonathan Roth, Olivia Ghiselli, and Alex Jansen prosecuted the case.
