Fernando Luis May-Gil-Garcia, Assault, Minnesota 2024

Fernando Luis May-Gil-Garcia, 29, and Avery Wade Schoenborn, 25, have been sentenced to seven years in prison for violent crimes committed on the Red Lake Indian Reservation in Minnesota.

According to court documents, May-Gil-Garcia repeatedly struck a female victim multiple times with his fists during an assault, causing multiple broken bones in her face. The victim was holding a baby in her arms at the time of the assault, and the baby was also struck during the incident. May-Gil-Garcia also bit the victim in the face and on the back.

May-Gil-Garcia, an enrolled member of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians, pleaded guilty to Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. He was sentenced to 84 months in federal prison by Senior Judge Richard H. Kyle in U.S. District Court in Duluth.

Separately, Avery Wade Schoenborn, 25, was also sentenced to 84 months in federal prison for sexually assaulting an intoxicated victim. The victim was unconscious in a friend’s home when Schoenborn entered and proceeded to sexually assault her. The victim was later taken to a hospital, where she regained consciousness and was treated and released.

The case against Schoenborn was proven at trial in U.S. District Court in Duluth, with the jury deliberating for less than two hours before returning a guilty verdict. Both cases were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Red Lake Police Department.
