Fidel Salinas, 27, of Donna, Texas, Charged with Hacking into Local Servers
A Donna man is facing 15 counts of computer-hacking charges, announced United States Attorney Kenneth Magidson.
Fidel Salinas, 27, allegedly repeatedly tried to gain unauthorized access to web servers hosting websites for Hidalgo County, La Joya Independent School District, and The Monitor newspaper.
Between November 2011 and January 2012, Salinas allegedly caused damage and obtained information from the servers, resulting in losses exceeding $5,000 for Hidalgo County alone.
Salinas is also accused of belonging to the computer-hacking group ‘Anonymous’ and participating in Operation Anti-Security. The FBI discovered Salinas’ alleged involvement after he made more than 14,000 hacking attempts to the administration management page of the Hidalgo County web site server in January 2012.
The FBI arrested Salinas in Donna in 2013 upon the filing of a criminal complaint. If convicted, Salinas faces up to 10 years in federal prison for each of the 15 counts.
The maximum sentence varies for each count, reaching a maximum of up to 10 years in federal prison upon conviction on the most serious charge.
