Little Eagle Man Sentenced for Abusive Sexual Contact and Attempted Aggravated Sexual Abuse

Little Eagle, South Dakota – A resident of Little Eagle, South Dakota, has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for abusive sexual contact and attempted aggravated sexual abuse of a house guest.

Ronnie Fire Cloud, 38, was convicted of the crimes and sentenced by U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann on December 30, 2013. Fire Cloud was also ordered to serve five years of supervised release, pay $400 in restitution, and a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The conviction stems from an incident on November 2, 2012, in which Fire Cloud allowed the victim to use his shower. While she was showering, he entered the bathroom, fondled her, and attempted to rape her. The victim was able to escape, flee the residence, and contact the authorities.

A federal grand jury indicted Fire Cloud on December 11, 2012, on charges of Abusive Sexual Contact, Attempted Aggravated Sexual Abuse, and Aggravated Sexual Abuse by Force. On October 15, 2013, Fire Cloud went on trial before Judge Kornmann. On October 16, 2013, a jury found him not guilty on the charge of Aggravated Sexual Abuse by Force, but guilty on the other two charges.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Standing Rock Agency, National Park Service, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley prosecuted the case.

Fire Cloud was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service after the sentencing. The U.S. Attorney’s Office praised the victim for her courage in coming forward and cooperating with the investigation.

This case is a reminder that the U.S. Attorney’s Office will vigorously prosecute crimes of this nature and work to bring perpetrators to justice.
